Never leave wind, right?
Never leave wind, right?
Just in case you were wondering why I didn’t go to Santa Cruz for the AWT event.
Or not. But there’s a solid forecasts in place and the hits just keep on coming. Sure I can’t help but worry that “contest kill” might be lurking. But I hear Spring is the new Summer and it’s been known to blow for a month straight in the Summer around here so maybe we’re golden for the Wave Bash.
Looks like everything is in place except for the tour director and the judging stand and we’ll start setting that up Tuesday morning. And I’m so glad to see the Rock breaking a little better than it was earlier in the season. I was getting worried the last couple times I sailed there as I’d been having some rather hateful sessions at Bad Rock. But it’s improved noticeably since then. The inside game is back and there’s a nice peak up by the watch rocks that can peel all the way across the venue.
The placement of the judge’s scaffolding will be tricky as some late evening high tides (almost 8’) will obligate having it back away from the Rock. The best view for the judges works out to be about 40 paces south and a little back from the more usual set up spot.
So the Wednesday night sign up party is at the Chowder house this year. And I’ll be most looking forward to the BBQ at the Inn of the Beachcomber Friday. And the wrap party for sure as this is my last deadline for awhile and it’ll be so good to have my life back and be back on the sailing program full-time. I just hope some of the crew hangs out after the contest this year for some free sailing and a chance to work on some photography.
See you out there.
Time to do the Rock?
6/7/15
So the outside of my favorite long term forecast is looking solid with a 1032 high pressure in place. The swell has been mixed but steady with a nice overhead bump a couple days ago for some of the best Rock and Cape we’ve had in awhile. My apologies that I don’t have any coverage of that, but I’m so stoked Nancy could come down to get you these most excellent shots of the day after. It was after all still showing, and it turned out to be the best fun I’ve had at the Rock so far this year.

And in case you’re wondering, it hasn’t been all fun and games at the Rock. That last SW swell delivered some of the better Cape riding we’ve had in awhile. Tricky wind sure, but the waves were so good that all the suffering for them was forgiven. And while I’m still feeling weak after having the grip, my technical game is coming back and now if I can just get my timing tuned up, I should be getting back in form.
This was a fun moment. I’d hucked a forward in this guy’s general direction the last time we’d passed and he was so very kind to return the favor with a nice casual back looping air on our next pass.
Clayton was certainly ripping hard and he also had by far the best huck-a-bail of the day.
And it was so excellent to have Eric Schroder in the house and throwing down with so much stoke and feeling.
So let me spare you any more commentary and go get back to preparations for the Wave Bash. And to the sailing as it’s been blowing every day for awhile now. If I don’t see you here for the Bash, look for some coverage on the next report. With respect and gratitude. __________\_
