“As the jetty breaks”.
... hearing about all the jetty sessions. Yeah, and I totally understand if you are getting bored of all the shots of the guy on the white sail and how they are all starting to look the same. But the jetty has been where the best action is happening lately and I for one (along with a core of like minded crew), just love sailing there. A warm freshwater dip on the outside when you drop into the river’s outflow. Smooth sailing like only a jetty provides. And the right hander coming off the jetty’s point routinely delivers a dozen turns or more. The carry from the van to the water’s edge is about forty paces so there’s no concern about coming back to tweak gear or change your sail. Yeah, even the photographers are stoked as you have so many options including shooting from the comfort of you very own vehicle.
Sure it’s not all love and light at the jetty though. High tide brings a mean shorepound on the increasingly steep beach that is faintly reminiscent of the kind of abuse I used to endure at “Ego Beach” on Hatteras. And when the tide is going out hard, the current can sweep you downwind so fast that you get dizzy if you make the mistake of taking the time to look back at the beach. And don’t let the whales breaching or the sea lions tossing Salmon carcasses around surprise you. It’s all in fun. And was that a gunshot? No, it’s the “Sea Lion Patrol” out hucking bombs to spook just about everything but the sea lions. Oh yeah, and beware the fickle wind when it gets much over 16 C in town. As often in the Summer, the jetty becomes a morning spot and then commonly delivers a lovely evening sesh as the wind swings offshore and fills in again. Which I don’t mind. Catch the early sesh, get some lunch and get stuff done in town, then rally the evening cleanup before calling it a day and heading back over the hill. Ahhhhh the jetty. Sure it’s a love/hate relationship but I mostly remember all the love.
And just when you were about over ...

Much love out to Trudy Lary for taking time out of here sailing to shoot us a little. Sure it was kind of smallish out there but still some of the best fun we’ve had in awhile.
And here ya go some shots I grabbed from the van as I pulled up and while I was on break. That’s Jeff on his fresh Simmer threads. Then Clayton working out on his 4.7 and then a nice hack from Kenny.
This last series comes to us care of Tigi later that afternoon as it got too warm in town and the wind got light. I took the opportunity to see if that 5.0 Fringe on the 92 Pyramid would get me a few more waves. While I had to schlog heavily in the holes, the magic that sail infers when you are on the wave and in transition will take me awhile to figure out how to describe. More on that soon though.
And then, later that afternoon, as the temps cooled and the wind came back in, ....
Scott Riggin’burg hitting one with the 92 thruster.
And Clayton “the Prince of Purple” Philippart making the jetty look fun, quad 84 style, ....
Kenny was on hand and looking stoked on his purple 82 thruster.
But who’s that dude out there on that old 85 LS? I didn’t know there were any of those still around.
Well, thanks again for taking the time to see what we’ve been up to out here. Hope it spreads a little stoke and gets you thinking about a visit to the south coast or maybe even getting off that dated kit and taking advantage of what a game changer the new gear is.
With respect and gratitude. ____________\_
