Remember when it used to be cool and shitty and blow out of the south all the time on the Oregon Coast?  Well those days seem to be increasingly rare.  It’s the middle of February and I have some tan on.  Been sailing the north winds.  Even the locals are showing up to sail. The Cape has already claimed a couple masts and sails and it feels as if the season has begun in earnest.

So this next series is from Kissing Rock back when it used to blow from the south in the winter once in awhile.  I know.  What a drama queen.  It had only been a month, but hey.  And sure I was way out of position on this first one, but still love the shot because it is such a pretty wave.  While the south swell was sweeping the middle bar clean, a rather fickle wind was keeping it interesting.

With much love and gratitude out to Tigi for shooting these for us during a break in the rain.

And these Cape shots all come to us thanks to Clayton who was patiently waiting on the bluff for the wind to pick up just a little more.  Which it unfortunately didn’t do until the next day.  He was however, happily enough, on hand to catch that and there are photos of that day in the preceding blog.

Not too surprisingly, Scott was on hand for this one too.  Dude has to drive all the way from Portland and still catches it more this time of year than just about all the locals put together.

This one was a little embarrassing as I went for a late jibe onto a wave, never really got the fins engaged and proceeded to go skipping down the face for awhile.

It’s always hard driving by this spot on my way to sail at the N. Jetty.  Especially after the look you get as you drive down the hill and see it laid out before you.  But the current can be cruel as the spot is exposed with nothing to break the longshore flow.   Still, the sandbar is working especially well with a large delivery thanks to Hunter Creek and a couple big rains recently.  So I’ve been looking at it a lot harder this winter and even caught some more turns there a couple days ago.  (I had to walk the beach for them but hey.)

Thanks again to Clayton and Tigi for the submissions, and of course, to you for reading Boardhead International.

Truly it’s so good on the Oregon Coast.  These have been my most painless winters since Puerto Rico.  Sure I’m a little crazy with the gear envy with all the fresh stuff coming out.  But other than that, life is so insanely good out here.  And as I’m so fond of saying, “Oregon provides”.

There’s not much gear news as it’s been all about the maintenance rather than upgrades lately.  The camera mount project is a wrap though.  At least until I’m beset by any more ideas.   Must be time to shoot some footage and get on it.
